IRIS POKOVEC (born 1992, Ljubljana) is a visual artist based in Ljubljana.
Iris Pokovec studied Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana, where she received her master's degree in 2017 with her final thesis Likeability and Buyability. Since then, all her art production has been conducted through her own art brand Menažerija, producing modern curiosities built upon (and with) the language and tools of today’s consumerist pop culture. Her practice consists primarily of painting and print-based media with a focus on the relationship between present-day consumer plastics, 21st-century marketing slogans and contemporary pop nihilism.
So far, she has presented herself with Menažerija in the solo exhibitions Menažerija: 37 Days of Christmas (International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenija, 2020), Menažerija: Sigmund Freud Collection Premiere (Zigutamve Project Space, Vienna, Austria, 2018), Menažerija: Likeable and Buyable (GalerijaGallery, Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2018) and has carried out several solo projects including Menažerija: New Year's Resolutions 2019, for which she was awarded a work grant from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and as part of which she also conducted the survey Menažerija: How to make art Likeable and Buyable, The Research (2019) in Slovenia, with a reprise in England, Menažerija: How to Make Art Likeable and Buyable, The Research (2019) at the Art Residence of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia in London. She also participated and exhibited in several group projects and exhibitions at home and abroad: Gallery.Delivery: Live Love Laugh, curated by Jure Kirbiš and Janez Fakin Janša (Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2021), A Percentage for Art (Menažerija: Buy Art Campaign, Slovenia, 2018), Made in China: Authentic Slovenian Art in Belgium (WARP, Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, 2018), Made in China: Goods and Services (Spike Berlin, Berlin, Germany, 2018) and Waardeloos (PERIOD gallery space, Haarlem, The Netherlands, 2019).
